2014 Israel S2NS PF 70 UC- Jacob's Dream

The famous dream of a ladder connecting heaven and earth has and will always be taught in synagogues and churches around the world. Now, this Biblical story has come to life in the form of a coin from the Israel Mint. It is the 19th coin in the Biblical Art Series and one that will definitely please the eye.

The Story of Jacob

The story of Jacob is a little more complicated than most people know. Jacob fled northwards from Beer Sheba (south of Israel) to his Uncle Laban in Haran (Syria today) fearing his twin brother, Esau. The reason for this fear is that Jacob had his brother's birth right sold to him for food and then posed as him to claim the firstborn blessing from their father, Isaac. The other reason he left is because his father and mother told him to go find a wife from his own kindred. Since these events weighed heavily on his life, he departed from his family with nothing but the clothes on his back.

Tired and weary, he stopped to lay down to sleep; resting his head on the stones of the ground. In a dream, he sees a ladder reaching from the earth up to heaven, with angels ascending and descending. On the top of the ladder was The LORD, Who said to Jacob that He is The God of Abraham and The God of Isaac.  And according to tradition, the foot of the ladder stood on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem, where the Holy Temple would one day be built.

The LORD speaks to him in this dream and reminds him of the promises He made to his father, Isaac and grandfather, Abraham. Why? Because Jacob is to continue the dynasty of Abraham and follow in his footsteps.  The LORD promises to guard Jacob constantly until he returns to the Land of Israel. And He also promises never to leave him throughout his journey to the Promised Land.

Jacob then awakens from the dream, very afraid saying "...this is none other but the house of God and this is the gate of heaven (Genesis 28:1-17).  After the dream, his journey begins by working for his Uncle Laban for 14 years as a servant. And after many wives and children, he finally received the blessing from God and was able to leave with more than he started with.

Although there are many interpretations of Jacob's dream and its significance to modern day life, the interpretation I heard this year was very intriguing. The ladder represents The Messiah, Yeshua connecting God and man one day in the land of Israel. And the angels are bringing the blessings from God in heaven to man on earth.  So cool...

Again, there are different interpretations of this dream, but they all have one meaning: There is always an open heaven connecting man to God...

The 2013 Israel S2NS PF 70 UC- David Playing For Saul

“David Playing For Saul” is the 18th coin from the Biblical Art Coin Series AND the FIRST ONE OUNCE silver coin minted in the series. This is a wonderful “piece of art” to look at with the image of David playing his harp for Saul. However, the history behind it is even more intriguing and that’s why I wanted to share this with you…

The Story of Saul and David

During the time of the Judges, the Philistines were a menace to the people of Israel and it was then that the people wanted a king, like the other nations, to lead them into battle instead of God. So God listened and gave them Saul, son of Quish, from the tribe of Benjamin. He was anointed by the prophet, Samuel and was ordered to lead the people of Israel and defeat their enemies. However, during his reign, he was not obedient to God's Word.

Instead, Saul listened to the people and did things according to his own will, as pointed out in 1 Samuel 15:1-22. God rejected him as king and ordered Samuel to search for another king by the way of Jesse, the Bethlehemite. There, Samuel asked for Jesse’s sons to pass by him, but they were not the one that God had chosen. Then Samuel asked if there was any more sons, and reluctantly, they sent for David, the shepherd from the field.  And God told Samuel "Arise! Anoint him; for this is he".

When Samuel anointed David for kingship, the Spirit of God left Saul and he was troubled by an evil spirit from that point forward. It was during this time that Saul asked his servants to find a man that can play well enough to ease his depression. However, when his servants found David, they had no idea that he was anointed to be the next king of Israel. So the most intriguing fact about this coin shows the image of Saul “fading out” from being the current king and making room for David, the new king-who happens to be the one playing music to soothe his soul.  Wow…
