In tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969, the Royal Australian Mint and U.S. Mint have joined forces for the first time to issue an exciting pair of domed proof coins.
Only 10,000 sets will be released, of which, only 4,000 will be available outside of Australia, which include a copper-nickel U.S. half dollar coin and a selectively colorized Australian $5 coin struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver. The domed reverse of the Australian coin depicts an Apollo 11 astronaut standing near the lunar lander with the colorized earth above. An excerpt from Neil Armstrong's account of the Landing, taken from his transmissions with NASA during the monumental moment, forms the background to the CSIRO Parkes radio telescope. His vivid words allow the holder to imagine themselves in that historic moment. The moon and Ian Rank-Broadley's Queen Elizabeth II effigy also appear on the concave obverse. The American coin's domed reverse by Phebe Hemphill features the lunar surface reflected in Buzz Aldrin's helmet visor. An astronaut's boot print appears on the concave obverse created by Gary Cooper and Joseph Menna. This coin has been issued the perfect grade of Proof 70. It has also been designated Ultra Cameo for it's contrast between the field (background) of the coin and the devices (elevated areas) as well as the exclusive First Release designation.
