Be a part of the US Mint's celebration of one of man's greatest accomplishments and one of America's biggest Cold War victories with this 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof. The coin is one of seven issued to mark the occasion. This is only the second time in history that the US Mint has issued a domed coin. Part of a mintage of 400,000 pieces, this coin was struck on a .999 fine silver, 26.73 g planchet at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin also comes with an Apollo 11 Mission Patch. Gary Cooper's artwork won a design contest for the obverse. It features a footprint on the surface of the moon along with the names of NASA programs that led up to the famous landing. The reverse is the convex section of the coin. Domed to replicate the shape of its subject, it is a recreation of Buzz Aldrin's helmet from a picture taken during the first lunar landing. The image reflected in Aldrin's visor consists, from left to right, of the American flag, Neil Armstrong, and the lunar module on the surface of the moon. This coin has been issued the perfect grade of Proof 70. It has also been designated Ultra Cameo for it's contrast between the field (background) of the coin and the devices (elevated areas) as well as the coveted First Day of Issue designation. www.isncoinshop.net
