Out and about today to run some errands, I decided to stop by my favorite, local coin store just to see what was up and what was new. And one coin caught my attention... 2014 Silver Panda Smithsonian Institution PF70 Ultra Cameo Official Mint Medal. The Smithsonian Institution Silver Medal is issued by China Great Wall Coins Investments Limited and is minted by the Shenzhen Guobao Mint. The obverse depicts the image of the Smithsonian Castle & the Great Wall of China while the "Smithsonian Institution" is in English and Chinese with the year date. The reverse shows two famous pandas from the National Zoo: Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. Mei Xiang, is the female and her name means "beautiful fragrance" while Tian Tian, the male, means "more and more". They are only the second pair of giant pandas that the National Zoo has ever had.
On the coin, the pandas' names are engraved in Chinese and "Mei Xiang and Tian Tian at National Zoo" are engraved in English along with details of the weight, material, and fineness. Each medal contains 1 ounce of 99.9% fine silver and is 40mm in diameter. The total mintage of this coin is 500,000.
